Well, well who says that a Prom Queen has to be female?  An openly gay man, Sergio Garcia, 18, was crowned Prom Queen at Los Angeles' Fairfax High School.  The idea of Sergio running for Prom Queen started out as a stunt.  However, it turned out to be the real deal for Sergio when he was officially crowned Prom Queen at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.

Sergio said that he would wear a suit to Prom and he did along with a tiara.  He decided to run for Prom Queen because he saw flyers all around the school.  They DID NOT specify that you had to be a female to run for Prom Queen.  That's a good point and it would probably hold up in court (just an FYI for anyone interested in becoming a lawyer).

Some people were not happy that Sergio won Prom Queen.  Here's an excerpt from an article from the San Francisco Chronicle, "...Senior class President Vanessa Lo said she and many other students were initially against the idea, but were won over by Garcia's speech, and became convinced he wasn't just an attention-seeking clown."

Sergio has no intentions of becoming a girl, although he does consider himself a "queen" at heart.  He just wants to be himself.  One thing is for sure, the Class of 2009 at Fairfax High School is open-minded.  After all, it's known to be a haven for kids who would be thought of as MISFITS at other schools.  BTW:  Members of the The Red Hot Chili Peppers once attended Sergio's school.  I think that says it all!

Do you think that Sergio deserved to win?  Do you think it was right or wrong?  Why?  Why not?
